Incident at CALGARY INTL AB (CYYC)
2020-04-09: After departing Runway 35L at 2034Z, a WestJet Boeing 737-8CT (WJA1516) from Calgary, AB (CYYC) to Phoenix, AZ (KPHZ) requested to level at 10,000 feet due to the smell of an electrical fire. WJA1516 subsequently declared an emergency and landed Runway 35L at 2046Z. Runway 35L was closed until 2054Z due to WJA1516 remaining on the runway. Minimal impact on operations.
2020-04-20: UPDATE TSB Report #A20W0025: The WestJet Boeing 737-800, C-FUMF, was operating as WJA1516 from Calgary, AB (CYYC) to Phoenix, AZ (KPHX). Shortly after takeoff from CYYC, the cabin crew notified the captain that there was an acrid smell in the cabin. The flight crew declared an emergency and diverted to return to CYYC. WJA1516 landed uneventfully on Runway 35L. The aircraft stopped on the runway, where it was met by ARFF. After ARFF determined that there were no signs of smoke or fire, the aircraft returned to the gate. Company maintenance inspected the aircraft and found no smell of fumes. The aircraft was serviced by maintenance the previous night, including an engine borescope inspection.
