Incident at 45 miles S CALGARY INTL AB (CYYC)
2016-06-03: UPDATE: TSB#A16W0052: C-GTJL, a Sunwest Aviation Ltd Learjet 35A, was operating as flight CNK633 from Calgary Intl, AB (CYYC) to Houston/William P Hobby, TX (KHOU). While in the climb through 11 000 feet, the flight crew noticed that the aircraft was left of track and attempted to correct. Crossing 14 000 feet, the aircraft was still deviating left of track so the PIC disconnected the autopilot to correct manually. At this point, the PIC felt significant resistance in the aileron controls. After the crew confirmed that the resistance was felt on both control columns, an emergency was declared. The crew requested shallow vectors only back to CYYC. The fuel in the wing tip tanks was jettisoned and the crew disengaged the yaw damper to aid in roll control. While on an extended downwind leg for Runway 17L, the PIC noticed increased roll control followed by an abrupt freeing of the controls. The crew confirmed that the controls were operating normally but continued with the emergency check list and flew the approach with the autopilot off. The aircraft safely landed at CYYC with ARFF in attendance. Subsequent inspection by the operator?s maintenance found no faults or damage to the aircraft control system and autopilot.
