Incident at 21 NM W ST. JOHN'S INTL NL (CYYT)
2015-06-24: The pilot of a Government of Newfoundland and Labrador Canadair CL215 1A10 (C-FYWP/ TKR285) on a local flight from St John's, NL (CYYT) reported an electrical problem and shut down the radio to save battery power. The flight was cleared #1 for an approach to Runway 16. Coordinated with Area Control Centre (ACC) to move an IFR aircraft, Cougar Helicopters (CHI72E) for a longer final to accommodate TKR285. TKR285 was able to turn the radio back on briefly to report final and coordinate taxi exit point. TKR285 landed safely at 2105Z.
2015-06-24: UPDATE: TSB Report#A15A0034: The Newfoundland and Labrador Government CL215 water bomber (registration C-FYWP) aeroplane had lifted off Bay Roberts (21 NM west of the airport) with a scoop of water to fight a fire when the crew noted a double generator failure. The crew returned to St John's airport using battery power only for radio transmissions and landed safely. Maintenance determined the R/H generator failed and the L/H generator failed after taking the whole load. The L/H generator circuit breaker was determined to be faulty and is being replaced.
