Incident at Gander Oceanic Airspace (Narsarsuaq, 70 NM NE)


2015-10-21: A United Parcel Service Boeing 767 300 (N322UP/ UPS238) from London/ Stansted (EGSS) to Louisville, KY (KSDF) encountered moderate to severe turbulence over eastern Greenland at 6145N04317W until 6143N04340W. The aircraft was unable to maintain speed and altitude. Flight cleared at FL310, descended to FL304 and climbed to FL341 before encountering smooth air. Gander Oceanic recleared flight at FL340.
2015-10-21: UPDATE: TSB Report#A13A0129: The United Parcel Service Boeing 767-300F, registration N322UP, was operating as UPS238 at FL310 on a cargo flight from London Stansted to Louisville International. The aircraft encountered severe turbulence for about 7 minutes over eastern Greenland, having difficulty maintaining altitude, airspeed and directional control. The autopilot and auto throttles were disengaged several times before the flight was re-cleared to FL340. The aircraft landed safely at destination and company maintenance complied with Boeing turbulence inspection requirements.
