Incident at GANDER INTL NL (CYQX) (Aerodrome, runway or taxiway shutdown)
2014-12-15: TSB A13A0094: The Exploits Valley Air Services Beech 1900D aircraft, registration C-GERI, was operating as EV173 for a cargo flight from Gander, NL (CYQX) to Deer Lake, NL. While on initial roll for takeoff on runway 13, there was a bang and the number 1 engine (Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67D) indicated a high interstage turbine temperature. The takeoff was rejected at low speed and the aircraft was brought to a stop on the runway without further incident. Both engines were shut down and the CYQX tower was contacted to advise that the aircraft remained on runway 13. The runway remained closed for approximately 20 minutes until the aircraft could be towed from the runway. The wind was light at CYQX and two local training flights were cleared for landing on CYQX runway 21 while runway 13 was closed. Company maintenance noted that the number 1 propeller was difficult to turn by hand due to an internal failure of the number 1 engine. The engine was removed and sent to engine overhaul facility. An engineering report detailing the damage will be provided to the TSB at a later date.
