2014-11-13: UPDATE: TSB Report#A13A0055: The Sunwing Boeing 737-800 (registration C-GTVG) aeroplane departed Halifax International (CYHZ) enroute to Santa Clara Cuba (MUSC). Upon departure and climbing through 500 feet the crew heard several loud bangs. Engine instruments were observed to be normal. A flight attendant stated they saw a fire from the left engine, a Mayday was declared and the left engine was shutdown as a precaution. The aircraft with only crew (7) on board landed safely at 0507 AST. There was no fire or smoke present upon landing and the aircraft taxiied in under its own power. Maintenance confirmed a bird strike and ingestion caused the engine incident and precautionary shut down. Inspection and repairs are being conducted after which the aircraft will be released for service.
2014-10-10: Update: Follow-up information received from Airworthiness ? National Maintenance Operations [2014/08/18]: A Civil Aviation Safety Inspector (CASI) looked into this occurrence. The CASI contacted the company and was advised that all applicable maintenance tasks were completed, with no faults found. Inspections of the left engine were accomplished; all areas inspected were found to be within the manufacturer?s limits. Satisfactory engine power runs were carried out with no adverse vibration and the aircraft was returned to service. The CASI advised that no further Transport Canada follow-up was required at this time.
2014-11-13: A Sunwing Airlines Boeing 737-8Q8 (C-GTVG/ SWG9589) from Halifax, NS (CYHZ) to Santa Clara (MUSC) departed runway 23 at 0745Z. Mayday call was received at 0746Z. Fire was reported in the left engine. Emergency vehicles were standing by on runway 23. Aircraft landed safely at 0807Z. No fire or smoke was present. Aircraft stayed on the runway to let engine cool off and taxied in under its own power shortly afterwards.
