Incident at Vicinity of LAKES Intersection (ATS operating irregularity)

Summary

2011-03-25: AUA72, Boeing 767-300, enroute from Toronto (CYYZ) to Vienna (LOWW), was routing TEALS direct LAKES when the crew requested Oceanic Clearance from the Gander Area Control Centre (ACC). Gander issued an Oceanic Clearance from LAKES direct to 61/60 66/50, etc., at 33,000 ft. During the read back from the crew, the pilot read back TEALS direct 61/60, omitting LAKES and the controller did not notice the discrepancy. This resulted in the aircraft proceeding off course as the pilot mistakenly believed they were cleared direct. The error was noticed on radar by the Montreal ACC and the situation was corrected. There was no traffic and no impact on operations.
