Incident at KANNI Intersection

Summary

2011-01-25: After passing position KANNI, BAW116, Boeing 777-200, enroute from New York (KJFK) to London (EGLL), was preceding off course. When questioned, the flight crew stated that while on the ground in New York, the pilot phoned Gander Oceanic and inquired as to the possibility of going over BANCS and NAT W. Gander assured the pilot that there would be no problems getting on NAT W. The pilot took this as a clearance and amended his route to KANNI direct BANCS, without filing another flight plan. There was no impact on operations.
