Incident at HALIFAX / STANFIELD INTL NS (CYHZ)
2010-06-04: Approximately 15 miles out of Halifax (CYHZ), ACA609, Embraer E190, enroute from Halifax to Toronto (CYYZ), reported fumes in the cockpit and elected to return to Halifax. There was no emergency declared but Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) were placed on standby for the landing. As the aircraft was returning the pilot reported that the fumes noticeably dissipated. The aircraft landed safely at 12:45Z with no impact on operations. TSB Case Closed.
2010-06-10: UPDATE TSB: A10A0059: The Air Canada Embraer E190 (C-FNAI), operating as flight ACA609, departed Halifax en-route to Toronto. During the initial climb the flight crew noticed an acrid odour. They decided to return to Halifax for a maintenance inspection, although the smell had dissipated. At 09:45 ADT the aircraft landed with no further discrepancies. The aircraft was 2300 kilograms overweight on landing. A PAN or MAYDAY was not declared. ARFF accompanied the flight to the gate where they conducted an inspection of the cabin with a thermal imaging camera; all temperatures were normal. Company maintenance personnel replaced the # 1 engine bleed check valve as per AMM 36-11-02.
