Incident at FREDERICTON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Summary

2010-03-15: After landing and while taxiing to exit the runway, C-FNTJ, Diamond DA 20 C1, declared MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY due to propeller problems. The Flight Service Station (FSS) did not hear the identification of the aircraft that was declaring the MAYDAY. Direction Finder (DF) Bearings were consistent with another aircraft on the left downwind to base for Runway 09. FSS assumed that the MAYDAY was from the aircraft on base. C-FNTJ taxied to apron and advised that the situation appeared normal. The other aircraft in the circuit landed. Nil TSB.
2010-04-07: UPDATE Maintenance & Manufacturing: It was determined that the student pilot experienced a nose wheel shimmy and the issue was not related to the propeller. The nose wheel on this aircraft has caster steering and given the right conditions and loading it is known to experience a shimmy. The nose wheel was inspected and no damage was found. The student pilot was also counseled on declaring a MAYDAY when on the ground.
