Incident at 12 min west of 57n 30w.


2010-02-05: AAL45, Boeing 767-300, enroute from Paris (LFPG) to New York (KJFK), at 13:30Z, requested to descend from 35,000 ft. to 33,000 ft. Gander advised the flight that it was unable to grant clearance due to traffic. At 13:35Z, AAL45 declared an emergency and advised Air Traffic Control (ATC) that they were diverting 15 nautical miles right of track and descending to 33,000 ft. in an attempt to restart the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU). ATC suggested 30,000 ft. as a final flight level that had no traffic. AAL45 advised continuing descent to 30,000 ft. AAL45 reached 30,000 ft., 15 nautical miles off set from track. At 13:46Z the flight crew requested diversion to Keflavik (BIKF). The APU was restarted at 13:51Z and the flight was cleared on track D at 30,000 ft. to New York. TSB Case Closed.
2010-03-16: UPDATE TSB: A10A0016: The flight crew of AAL45, an American Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from Paris to New York at F350, requested a descent to F330 in order to re-start the aircraft APU. Gander Oceanic control advised the crew that they were unable to issue the clearance due to lower traffic after which the crew declared an emergency and carried out the NAT contingency procedure descending to F330. Gander Oceanic advised the crew that there was no traffic at F300 after which the crew advised that they were continuing descent to F300. After reaching F300, the crew requested a diversion to Reykjavik; however, after successful re-start of the APU, the crew requested and received a clearance to New York. The aircraft exited Canadian airspace without further incident.
