Incident at ST. JOHN'S INTL NL (CYYT)

Summary

2010-02-01: IDPCR, CL2T departed St. John?s (CYYT) for LPLA on Runway 29 at 1441 UTC, and made an immediate left turn heading towards RONPO. The pilot was cleared on a SID departure that required the pilot to fly runway heading and climb to 5000 feet. The result of the pilot?s actions required that the low domestic controller issue immediate instructions to the pilot to fly heading 290. A CHI31 helicopter had departed Runway 20 prior to the IDPCR departure and was climbing on runway heading to 5000 ft. The IDPCR was heading towards the CHI31 and was approx 3 miles distance when the turn was issued and followed. Weather conditions VFR. TSB Case Closed
2010-02-12: UPDATE TSB: A10A0015: I-DPCR, an Italian Canadair CL-215T, had departed Runway 29 at St. John's NL en route to Lajes airport, Azores Islands. The aircraft had been cleared for the SID 3 departure which requires the aircraft to maintain runway heading to 5000 feet ASL. Just after departure, the aircraft turned left toward the RONPO North Atlantic Track coast out point. The controller immediately issued instructions to the crew of I-DPCR to turn to a heading of 290 degrees. CHI31, a Cougar Helicopters Sikorsky S92, has departed Runway 20 climbing runway heading. Separation between the two aircraft did not erode to less than the required three nm lateral separation, however, safety was not assured.
