Incident at HALIFAX / STANFIELD INTL NS (CYHZ) (Aerodrome, runway or taxiway shutdown)

2009-09-10: UPDATE TSB: A09A0080: An Air Canada Airbus A320 (C-FKCO), operating as ACA654, had departed Runway 14 at Halifax en route to St. John's, NL when the crew noticed a vibration followed by ENG 2 FADEC ALTERNATOR warning and fire indication for the number two engine. The crew shutdown the affected engine (General Electric CFM56) and declared an emergency requesting and receiving a clearance to return to Halifax. The aircraft returned to Halifax and landed safely on Runway 14 without further incident with ARFF standing by. ARFF personnel scanned the aircraft for fire with no result. The runway was closed for approximately 28 minutes due to ARFF personnel having to clean up an oil spill from the failed engine. At the time of the incident, the other runway at Halifax, Runway 23/05, was closed due to construction. Subsequently, company maintenance inspection revealed that the drive shaft for the FADEC alternator (P/N 85570-1) driven by the engine gearbox which supplies electrical power to the engine FADEC system, had sheared. The engine has been replaced and the aircraft returned to service.
