Accident at Rapid Lake

2006-08-02: On July 28 at 1255Z, the flight service specialist was informed of an emergency locator transmitter (ELT) signal about 83 nautical miles southeast of Kuujjuaq (CYVP). At 1302Z, the specialist asked the pilot of C-FUGL, which was inbound for Rapid Lake, about the ELT signal. The pilot, who was also the owner of the outfitting operation, confirmed that the signal was originating from privately-owned Cessna 305 C-FLRT, which had taken on water on one if its floats while taxiing on the lake to take off on July 26. The aircraft flipped over onto its side. The pilot of C-FUGL tuned into the Rapid Lake emergency frequency and confirmed to the specialist that he was no longer picking up the ELT signal and that it was not an emergency.
2006-08-11: Update #1: TSB number and investigation class inserted. Flight phase changed to water landing, added accident time and damage to aircraft. According to TSB REPORT #A06Q0135: Cessna 305 C-FLRT experienced damage to its right float upon landing on Rapid Lake. The aircraft had been parked at the wharf all night. The next morning the owner-pilot attempted to take the aircraft out of the water to make repairs. When he moved the aircraft, the right float sank and the right wing touched the water. The pilot was not injured, but the aircraft experienced significant damage.
