Incident at 10 NM NW of CALGARY / SPRINGBANK AB (CYBW) (Propeller/rotor strike, Forced landing, Engine failure)

Summary

2005-06-22: UPDATE TSB reported that the Sukhoi SU-26MX, N3472J, was engaged in aerobatics about 10 NM northwest of the Springbank, AB airport, (CYBW) when the engine (Vedenegyev M14PF) lost power. The aircraft was successfully force-landed in a field, with damage limited to the wooden propeller blades. There were no injuries to the pilot who was picked up by a military helicopter operating in the area. The pilot suspects that the power loss was due to carburetor ice, since atmospheric conditions were conducive to its formation.
2005-06-10: The pilot of a Sukhoi SU-26MX aircraft, registration N3472J, was conducting aerobatics near Springbank when the a/c apparently had an engine failure. The pilot force-landed safely in a field west of Jumping Pound Gas Plant. The only damage was to the propeller. The pilot was picked up by a military Griffon helicopter which was operating in the area and transported to Springbank.
