2005-06-14: UPDATE TSB reported that the West Wind Aviation Hawker Siddeley HS748, registration C-FCSE, operating as WEW 770, was cleared for a straight-in VOR DME Runway 18 at La Ronge, SK, by Winnipeg radar. After switching to the mandatory frequency for La Ronge about 25 miles from La Ronge, the crew did not re-file VFR or seek an amended approach clearance. However, because other aircraft were using Runway 36 the crew manoeuvred east of the field and conducted a circling approach to Runway 36. Intentions were broadcast on the mandatory frequency. Finally, to accomodate other traffic, the crew executed a missed approach and circled to land on Runway 18. During the missed approach, the crew confirmed with the FIC that they were proceeding VFR. There was no risk of collision.
