Incident at WINNIPEG / ST. ANDREWS MB (CYAV)

Summary

2005-06-01: The instructor and student pilot in C-GQPN, a Piper Cherokee, were on a night cross country VFR flight from St. Andrews airport. The aircraft was on a VFR flight plan with an ETA of 0510Z at St. Andrews. At 0610Z, Winnipeg FIC considered the aircraft to be overdue and began a communication search. The Chief Flying Instructor was contacted and he drove to the airport to verify that the a/c was parked on the ramp. In discussion with the instructor, she stated that she had closed the flight plan with Winnipeg FIC on 126.7. If that is the case, it appears that the message was lost somewhere in FIC. Nav Canada is currently reviewing their audiotapes to verify the radio transmission.
