Incident at ARVIAT NU (CYEK)

2005-05-20: CAV 7515, a Saab 340, hit a sea gull while landing on Runway 15 at Arviat. There were numerous sea gulls in the area at the time.
2005-06-03: UPDATE Aerodrome Safety reported that the CARS operators at Arviat issued voice advisories warning landing and departing aircraft of the unusual (numbers of gulls) bird activity on and around the airport and the runway. These warnings were broadcast as part of the normal pilot advisories prior to and after the occurrence. The nesting grounds were inaccessible because of late spring blizzards. The airport maintainer as well as the local conservation officer set off screamers and poppers in an attempt to remove the gulls. The birds have now moved off to their normal nesting areas which has greatly reduced the bird hazard at Arviat.
2005-05-30: UPDATE TSB reported that Calm Air flight CAV 7515, a Saab 340, struck a seagull with the left propeller upon landing on Runway 15 at Arviat. Approximately 30 seagulls were observed to depart the runway as the aircraft touched down. The crew did not initiate a touch and go because of the possibility of greater damage if the birds were struck in flight. The bird strike occurred on the landing roll at approximately 80 knots. One of propeller blades was damaged and required replacement. The operator has indicated that sea gulls are a seasonal hazard at this airport and believes that some sort of bird control is required.
