Incident at CALGARY / SPRINGBANK AB (CYBW)

Summary

2005-05-19: The amateur-built and privately-operated Rans S-7 Courier, registration C-FTLG, had departed Springbank, AB on a VFR flight to Lloydminster, AB. The pilot elected to return to Springbank after approximately 30 minutes en route, due to deteriorating weather. As the flight was about to re-enter the Springbank control zone, the engine (Bombardier Rotax 912-A3) began to emit smoke and mechanical noise, and would not produce sufficient power to maintain flight. The pilot subsequently force-landed in a field about 4.5 NM northeast of the airprt. There was no damage or injury. Examination determined that the engine had sustained a broken connecting rod.
