Incident at GILLAM MB (CYGX)

Summary

2005-05-17: CAV 7543, a Hawker Siddeley HS748-2A, registration C-GSBF was en route Winnipeg, MB to Thompson, MB. Approximately 20 NM north of Gillam, MB the crew reported smoke in the cockpit. The crew declared an emergency and began a rapid descent into Gillam where the aircraft landed safely. Emergency crews met the aircraft and the crew and passengers were deplaned without injuries. The operator will advise of its findings.
2005-05-18: UPDATE Maintenance and Manufacturing reported that a company maintenance inspection revealed that the #2 RADIO CRATE COOLING FAN was very hard to turn by hand, and the unit was smoke blackened and smelled strongly of electrical overheating. The #1 fan was checked and although the fan turned freely, some concern was felt over its rotational smoothness. Both fans were replaced, the associated electrical harnesses and C/Bs were inspected and tested serviceable. The a/c was released to service. No further problems have been reported. The subject fan was bench-tested and found to rotate very slowly with characteristics of overheating. During the test, the current draw on the fan remained below 15 amps, which would explain why the associated 15 amp C/B in the aircraft circuit did not pop. This incident is the subject of SDR 20050517003
