Incident at WHITEHORSE/ ERIK NIELSEN INTL (CYXY)

Summary

2005-05-03: On departure from Whitehorse, the pilot of C-GBZP, a Piper Comanche, reported that the engine was surging erratically. ARFF was advised and the pilot returned and landed safely at 1604Z.
2005-05-10: UPDATE Maintenance and Manufacturing reported that the owner decided to have the engine removed for overhaul last year because it was old and starting to make metal. At the same time, the prop governor was sent for overhaul and the prop for flushing. On his first flight this year, the engine ran trouble free for about an hour. On this, his second flight, just as the aircraft had taken off, the engine rpm began to surge. The governor is suspect and has been sent to the propeller shop for examination. The exact reason for the engine surges is unclear and troubleshooting procedures are ongoing.
