2005-05-02: The pilot of C-FORG
, PA-24 Comanche, departed Springbank on a VFR flight to Drumheller and contacted Calgary TCU. The aircraft was assigned a transponder code and when the pilot was queried about his location, he advised he was 10 miles southwest of Calgary International Airport. The pilot was unable to activate the transponder and radar identification was not established. The Controller again questioned the pilot about his location and altitude and it was established he was 1 mile west of the threshold of Runway 34 at YYC at 5,200 feet. Runway 16 was the active so the pilot was instructed to immediately climb to 5,500 feet and fly heading 090 degrees until clear of the departure path. The aircraft exited the zone to the east. The aircraft's transponder was either inoperative or the pilot failed to operate it in a manner required in Class C airspace. The aircraft entered Class C airspace, the Calgary Control Zone, without authorization.
