Incident at MEDICINE HAT AB (CYXH)

Summary

2005-04-12: CTT 230, a B727, was en route from Kansas City to Calgary and was flight-planned via GGW J477 VUCAN to YYC. As the a/c passed the Medicine Hat VOR, the First Officer (pilot flying) thought he was going by VUCAN and turned right rather than the required left turn. The Controller queried the crew and the Captain took control of the a/c, initiating a left turn. The Captain then took up the outbound 290 radial from the Glasgow, MT VOR rather than the correct 271 radial from the Medicine Hat VOR. The Controller then issued a vector to steer the flight back toward VUCAN. The a/c approached to 4.7 NM from the CYR 205 airspace, where 5 NM are required.
