Incident at WINNIPEG / JAMES ARMSTRONG RICHARDSON INTL MB (CYWG) (ATM - other)
2005-04-01: At 21:50Z the Winnipeg Tower experienced a building shaking bump immediately followed by the fire alarms sounding. The building elevator motor had burned out creating smoke. The duty team supervisor dispatched three of the 5 qualified control staff to the first floor with the evacuation kit to be prepared to staff the evacuation location in the event that the fire officials required an evacuation. Once the cause was confirmed the Tower resumed normal operations at 22:30Z. During the reduced staffing levels VFR flights were restricted. One IFR flight received an additional vectored turn for increased spacing.
2005-04-07: UPDATE ANS and Airspace reported that NAV CANADA advised that the elevator motor will be replaced early next week. In the meantime, control staff are climbing (and descending) 8 flights of stairs to the tower cab. (The Unit Manager expects none of his staff will have any difficulty passing their next medical examination.)
