2005-03-30: Shortly after takeoff from Runway 34 at Calgary, the student pilot of C-FBDH, a Cessna 172, reported he had engine problems and needed to return for a landing. The aircraft was brought in for Runway 25 and landed safely at 1545Z. No impact on other operators. Emergency Services were called out.
2005-04-06: UPDATE Maintenance and Manufacturing reported that upon debriefing of the student pilot, it was determined that the engine was 'excessively' leaned before takeoff. Procedure is 'FULL RICH' below 5,000 feet. The engine did not fail, it had only sputtered a couple of times and consequently, the pilot felt uncomfortable. In addition, an inspection was carried out with no mechanical defects found and the aircraft was released back to service by the AMO.
