Incident at NORTH BATTLEFORD (CAMERON McINTOSH) SK (CYQW) (Aerodrome - visual aids)
2005-03-21: SGS 4, a Beech King Air, was inbound to North Battleford when the flight crew found that the airport's ARCAL system was not responding. The airport manager was contacted to manually activate the lights, but he was unsuccessful. After waiting for almost 45 minutes, the crew then requested a clearance to Saskatoon.
2005-04-08: UPDATE Aerodrome Safety reported that the crew of SGS 4 a Province of Saskatchewan 200 series Beechcraft were unable to land and pick their passenger a local MLA and returned to Saskatoon. It was reported that the ARCAL failure was caused by a failed transformer or a broken wire . The Battlefords were under the influence of day time melting followed by freezing at night. These conditions cause underground electric pulpits to fill with water and then freeze which in turn can and does cause line breakage or shorting out. The NOTAM for night operations is still in effect. There have been no other reported aircraft delays or air traffic interruptions as a result of this event.
