Incident at WINNIPEG / JAMES ARMSTRONG RICHARDSON INTL MB (CYWG)

Summary

2005-03-02: UPDATE TSB reported that the Airbus A330-200, registration EI-DAA, operated by Aer Lingus as flight EIN 145, was cruising en route southeast of Winnipeg when the crew received a brake temperature warning. They observed brake temperature indications for wheel 7 of 530 degrees and wheel 8 of 125 degrees. The crew carried out the in-flight hot brake checklist, declared an emergency, and diverted to Winnipeg. The flight landed on runway 36 at Winnipeg without further incident. The aircraft was shut down on the runway for inspection by emergency response personnel, and was taxied to the apron when no abnormalities were found. The aircraft was returned to service with the #7 and #8 brake temperature monitoring unit sensors deactivated in accordance with the aircraft maintenance manual.
2005-02-28: EIN 145, an A330, was en route from Dublin to Los Angeles and was 30 miles southeast of Winnipeg at FL 380 when the crew requested descent to FL 200 due to a gear problem. At 1930Z, the crew declared 'MAYDAY' and diverted to YWG due to an overheat indication in the right main gear. The flight landed safely on Runway 36 at 1949Z. The crew stopped the a/c on the runway while ground crews did heat checks on the gear. The gear appeared to be normal and the a/c was taxied to the apron at 2006Z. TSB will look into the incident.
