Accident at GRANDE PRAIRIE AB (CYQU) (Aerodrome, runway or taxiway shutdown)
2005-02-14: C-GCCU, a Piper Comanche, landed gear up while conducting circuits at Grande Prairie.
2005-02-18: UPDATE TSB reported that the Piper PA-24-250 Commanche, registration C-GCCU, landed gear up on Runway 29 at Grande Prairie, Alberta, during a training flight. The lower fuselage and propeller sustained substantial damage. The landing gear retraction system was inspected and two gear swings were performed after the aircraft was recovered, and no pre-occurrence mechanical discrepancies were identified. Two flight instructors were on board the aircraft at the time of the occurrence. Neither sustained injury.
2005-02-14: Grande Prairie Airport reported that the aircraft landed with its gear up on Runway 29 while conducting circuits. Runway 11/29 was closed; 2 SOB, no injuries. Grande Prairie Fire Department was advised, requested by pilot to cancel as not required. CEO of Grande Prairie Airport advised and on site shortly after incident. Runway check performed and filed at 1557; previous runway check performed and filed at 1338 hours. Centre 180 feet bare and dry @ 95% with 5% ice patches. TSB advised. Aircraft touched down on center line approximately 200 metres from the threshold of Runway 29 and skidded for approximately 120 metres before coming to rest. TSB released the aircraft for recovery at 1552 local. The aircraft's owners and a maintenance crew recovered the aircraft by jacking up the aircraft and lowering the gear, then towed the aircraft off Runway 29 to a hangar. The area checked for debris; none was found. That portion of Runway 29 related to incident was then swept to ensure no FOD and Staff 21 performed a complete AMSCR. Runway 11/29 returned to service at 1900 hours local. Runway 07/25 fully operational with no impact to flights.
