Incident at SWIFT CURRENT SK (CYYN) (Aerodrome - visual aids)

2005-03-14: UPDATE Aerodrome Safety reported that the pilot was with the use of the aircraft landing lights and runway lead-in lights able to land on runway 30 without incident. The FIC( Flight Information Centre) at Edmonton issued a NOTAM regarding the failure of the runway edge lights one hour after the pilot of C-GCDZ had reported the unserviceability. Personnel from the Swift Current Airport reported that the area experienced a mild spell which resulted in a heavy snow melt, water then accumulated in and around the runway electrical pulpits. Temperatures unexpectedly fell to normal January values causing the water in the pulpits to freeze. This in turn caused the lighting system to malfunction. A steam Boiler truck from the City of Swift Current was used to thaw the pulpits which allowed airport maintained staff restore the runway electrical service. This event did not result in any reported delay's of air traffic.

The runway edge lights for Runway 30 were u/s, but the lead-in lights were serviceable. The edge lights for Runway 03/21 were working. Surface winds from the 0300 METAR were 260 degrees at 18 G25.
