Incident at YELLOWKNIFE NT (CYZF) (Aerodrome, runway or taxiway shutdown)
2005-01-27: UPDATE TSB reported that the Bradley Air Services Ltd. (First Air) Boeing 737-200, C-GNWN, was operating as FAB 6512 from Yellowknife, NWT to Ekati, NWT. During the initial climb, the flight crew observed erratic engine gauge indications for the number 2 engine (Pratt & Whitney JT8D-9A) accompanied by vibrations. The power was reduced to idle thrust and the flight crew declared an emergency and returned to Yellowknife. When the aircraft came to a stop on Runway 33, ARFF was requested to inspect the brakes. During this time the brakes seized and the runway remained closed for 2 hours while efforts were made to free the brakes. Maintenance observed damage to the turbine section of the engine and the engine was removed for replacement.
2005-01-25: FAB 6512, a B737, departed Yellowknife for Ekati and subsequently experienced an engine failure. The crew declared an emergency and returned to YZF. The aircraft landed safely at 2204Z, closing Runway 33 for almost 2 hours until 2349Z. Runways 09/27 were used during the closure and there was no impact on other arriving/departing aircraft.
