Incident at HARDISTY AB (CEA5)

2005-01-25: UPDATE Maintenance and Manufacturing reported that the Dynamic Flight Services Maintenance Co-ordinator reported that the aircraft C-GSGA experienced an electrical problem in flight. The voltage regulator circuit breaker popped. The pilot selected the aux regulator CB and after ten minutes the aux CB also popped. The pilot elected to land at the nearest airport with minimum electric load. As this is an older PA-31-300 the charging system uses only one regulator for both alternators. The failure of one alternator overloaded the circuit and caused the breaker to pop. Once the aircraft was on the ground the failed alternator was isolated and the charging system was operational. The aircraft was ferried to Calgary VFR were the alternator will be replaced before the next flight. The operator has submitted a SDR.
2005-01-21: C-GSGA, a Piper Navajo, was on a night IFR flight from Vermilion to Calgary when the pilot advised ATC he had lost all power except for his radio and needed to make an emergency descent to the nearest airport. The pilot was directed to Hardisty and he was able to get the aircraft safely on the ground at 0241Z. No equipment was available. The cause of the electrical failure is not known.
