Incident at WINNIPEG / ST. ANDREWS MB (CYAV)
2005-01-06: UPDATE TSB reported that the Winnipeg Aviation PA-28-140 aircraft, registration C-GQEX, was taking off on Runway 18 at St Andrews, MB on a local, student solo flight. The purpose of the flight was takeoff and landing practice. The first takeoff was a short field takeoff. As the student rotated the aircraft, he lost directional control and aborted the takeoff. The aircraft rolled to a stop in the snow along the side of the runway. There was no damage. The runway condition and winds were not considered factors in the runway excursion.
2005-01-19: UPDATE General Aviation reported that the CFI was contacted and indicated that the PIC was a student on a solo flight to practice short and soft field takeoffs and landings. The PIC had approximately 29.6 hours dual training and 14.2 hours solo training towards his private license. The CFI's debriefing of the PIC revealed that the PIC might have 'over-rotated' the aircraft during the takeoff roll. It became airborne too early, settled back to the runway with a bounce and at that point the PIC elected to reject the takeoff, resulting in the aircraft's rolling off the side of the runway. The CFI indicated during the follow-up interview that all instructors would be briefed on the incident and to be extra vigilant about short and soft field takeoffs and landing techniques.
2005-01-05: The pilot of C-GQEX, a Piper Cherokee, was departing St. Andrews on a local VFR training flight and he thought he was losing lateral control during takeoff. He reduced power, but the aircraft slid off the side of the runway. The runway was unavailable for 17 minutes while the aircraft was removed. It was reported that there were some runway edge lights that were broken as a result. It is not known if there was any damage to the Cherokee.
