Incident at HALIFAX / STANFIELD INTL NS (CYHZ)

Summary

2005-12-30: FLG2853, CRJ2, enroute from Halifax (CYHZ) to Detroit (KDTW) departed CYHZ at 1242Z and approximately 5 minutes after departure reported a fire indication. Aircraft circled while completing various checks, then declared an emergency and returned to CYHZ. Aircraft landed at 1304Z. An emergency crew was requested and, after landing, the runway was closed for about 10 minutes while a thermal inspection of the aircraft was carried out. Runway reopened at 1315Z. TSB Update: A defective smoke detector was determined to be the cause of the indication. TSB Case Closed.
2006-01-05: UPDATE TSB: A05A0162: FLG2853, a Northwest Airlink Bombardier CL-600, had departed Halifax for Detroit and at 20 miles from Halifax, the toilet smoke indicator light illuminated. The crew requested and received a holding clearance in order to complete the required checks and, a short time later, declared an emergency. They requested and received a clearance to return to Halifax and requested that ARFF personnel and equipment be standing by. The aircraft landed on Runway 23 without further incident. The runway was closed for approximately 10 minutes as ARFF personnel conducted a thermal inspection of the aircraft after which the crew taxied the aircraft to the terminal gate. Maintenance inspection revealed a faulty washroom smoke detector and subsequently the detector was deferred in accordance with the MEL. As the aircraft had landed above the maximum landing weight, it was be ferried to Detroit for an overweight landing inspection.
