Incident at DEER LAKE NL (CYDF)
2005-12-12: JZA8904 RJ-100 enroute from Halifax (CYHZ) to Deer Lake (CYDF) was cleared for a Straight-in localizer back course approach to Runway 07, and upon intercepting the localizer executed a missed approach (at 2226Z) and climbed to 6,000 feet without an ATC clearance, and proceeded to the northeast for approximately 35 nm. The flight was subsequently cleared for an ILS approach to Runway 25 and landed at 2254Z. The pilot later indicated that the flight had encountered some turbulence on the initial approach. There was no loss of separation. TSB evaluating.
2005-12-16: UPDATE TSB A05A0157: JZA8904, an Air Canada Bombardier CL-600 (C-FWJF), was on approach at Deer Lake, NL when the flight crew carried out a missed approach. The crew climbed the aircraft to 6000 feet ASL and proceeded 35 nm northeast of the Deer Lake airport without an ATC clearance. The flight was subsequently cleared for an ILS approach on Runway 25 at Deer Lake and landed safely without further incident. The crew later reported that they had encountered turbulence on the first approach. There was no loss of separation with other traffic. The TSB will be gathering further information on the incident.
