Accident at HOPEDALE NL (CYHO)

Summary

2005-11-07: A05A0148: The C-GJDE, a DHC-6-300, was landing on Runway 25 at Hopedale. The pilot had just touched down and placed the throttles into ?Beta? when the aircraft caught a gust of wind, yawed uncontrollably, and veered off the side of the runway. Directional control was regained, and the aircraft was then taxied onto the ramp and shutdown. Winds at the time were estimated to be from the north-northwest at 15-20 knots with gusts. The runway was reported to be snow-covered with two to three inches of crusty snow. There were no injuries to the two pilots or three passengers. It is reported that both wingtips received damage, one from contact with the VASIS light standard, the other from contacting a sign. The operator has dispatched a maintenance team to further assess the damage to the aircraft.
2005-11-07: SPR955, DHC6, enroute VFR Postville (CCD4) to Hopedale (CYHO). Flight plan closed with Halifax FIC at 1423Z. Halifax FIC was advised by Transport Canada at 1500Z that the aircraft had struck the VASIS (Visual Approach Slope Indicator System) Runway 07 when attempting to land. TSB Case Closed.
