Incident at SAINT JOHN NB (CYSJ)

Summary

2005-10-25: Maintenance & Manufacturing Update: The night before the flight to Saint John (CYSJ) the L/H MLG Shock Strut was replaced due to T/X for O/H. Gear swings were carried out with no issues and the aircraft was released for the charter. Into CYSJ the flight crew had a problem with the gear, as stated. Maintenance control suspected it was an indication problem with one of the WOW sensors that may be out of adjustment, as the shock strut was changed out the night before. The flight crew had checked the gear and no evidence of any problems and the Hydraulic system pressures and quantity was both good. The charter was returned to St. John?s (CYYT). With the selection of the MLG down into CYYT, all fluid was lost out of the #2 Hydraulic system; this is where this swivel fitting failed. The aircraft landed without further incident. Maintenance found the swivel fitting broke off. The line was replaced, the hydraulic fluid replenished and system bled of air. Gear swings were carried out and the aircraft was returned to service.
2005-10-17: LAL401, DHC8, enroute from St. John?s (CYYT) to Saint John (CYSJ) reported turning final for Runway 14. Pilot radioed they were breaking off the approach because of an indicator in the cockpit which suggested the landing gear was not down and locked. Aircraft orbited the field while the crew recycled the landing gear several times. CFR units were advised and went to stand-by position near Runway 14. Pilot reported getting the 3-green indication in the cockpit and proceeded to land without further incident on Runway 14 at 1640Z. Nil TSB
