Incident at Enroute Hyannis Maine to Fredericton

Summary

2005-06-30: TSB UPDATE A05A0070: At 2012 ADT, Boston center advised Moncton ACC that C-GILV, a Piper PA31 en route to Fredericton, NB had lost all electrics in IMC. The pilot was able to navigate using a hand held GPS and communicating with a cell phone. When about 10 minutes from CYFC the aircraft regained VMC. The aircraft was cleared for an approach prior to loss of cell phone communications. The aircraft landed at CYFC at 2054. The company has advised that the aircraft did not lose all electrics; however, the radios and Nav Aids were affected. The lead acid battery (GILL 426) had boiled over. The company is investigating the cause of the battery boil over.
2005-07-08: Update Maintenance & Manufacturing: Battery replaced and electrical system operated normal on aux regulator system. Suspect High voltage on main regulator system caused battery to boil and caused avionics failure. Overvoltage protection system did not remove alternators from system. Main voltage regulator and overvoltage sensor replaced. Avionics components removed, sent to repair shop & reinstalled. Aircraft returned to service
2005-06-29: At 2312Z, Boston center advised that CGILV PA31 enroute Hyannis Maine (KHYA) to Fredericton (CYFC) had lost all electrics in IMC weather. Aircraft was able to navigate using a hand held GPS and communicating with a cell phone. 10 minutes from CYFC the aircraft was cleared for an approach and the cell phone cut out. Aircraft landed CYFC at 2354Z. Nil TSB
