Incident at Gander Domestic (Conflict - loss of separation)
2005-04-26: TSB Update A05A0045: The Finnair MD11, operating as FIN5, was westbound enroute from Helsinki to JFK at FL360. Routing 60N 50W MOATT (1617Z), then LOMTA. A KLM Boeing 747-400, operating as KLM 641, was also westbound enroute from Amsterdam to JFK at FL360. Routing 59N 50W PRAWN (1624Z), then NAIN. At 1655 UTC FIN5 was issued a direct routing to TAFFY which conflicted with the protected airspace of KLM641. The situation was resolved when the aircraft were radar identified at 1708 UTC. The separation standard required 41 NM laterally or 10 minutes longitudinally in the non radar environment. By the time both aircraft were radar identified separation had reduced to 18 NM laterally. Nav Can is conducting an investigation.
2005-04-25: FIN5 MD11 enroute Helsinki (EFHK) to New-York (KJFK) and KLM641 B747-400 enroute Amsterdam (EHAM) to New-York (KJFK) were both westbound at 36,000 feet on parallel routes entering Gander Domestic Airspace at MOATT (1655Z) and PRAWN (1700Z) respectively. At 1655Z FIN5 issued direct routing which conflicted with protected airspace from KLM641. Situation resolved when both aircraft radar identified at 1708Z. Required separation was 41 NM lateral or 10 minutes longitudinal or 5 NM on radar. At the time both aircraft were radar identified separation had reduced to 18 NM lateral spacing. TSB Case Closed
