Incident at CALGARY INTL AB (CYYC) (Incursion - runway - animal)

2003-08-19: After landing on Runway 28 at Calgary, WJA 53 struck an animal. Airport personnel checked the runway and found a dead coyote. There were no delays to other aircraft during the inspection and normal operations were quickly restored.
2003-11-05: UPDATE Aerodrome Safety reported that the Airport Authority had a wildlife control officer on duty at the time, who responded and picked up the young, first year coyote. The airport has specific procedures for dealing with coyotes. Although the presence of coyotes on airside is potentially hazardous, the actual risk is considered to be low based on the frequency of occurrence. Coyote behaviour is often beneficial as they eat rodents, hares and deter nesting birds by eating their eggs and young. Coyotes are monitored and if one becomes a problem, then it is necessary to destroy the animal. In order to be considered a problem, the animal must demonstrate that it is a hazard to aviation safety, and this includes repeated incursions, diminished fear of humans, aggressive behaviour, an injured animal and overpopulation.
