Incident at SASKATOON / JOHN G. DIEFENBAKER INTL SK (CYXE)
2003-07-18: Shortly after departure from Runway 27 at Saskatoon, the crew of KA 1250, a Metro III, advised the Tower of a partial engine failure (power loss). AFF was called out. KA 1250 circled and landed without further incident on Runway 15 at 2109Z. One aircraft on approach to Runway 15 was inconvenienced slightly. TSB reported that the crew observed that the left engine would produce only 40% power. After landing, maintenance discovered a shorted wire in the EGT system, which resulted in the engine receiving a reduced fuel flow. The wire was repaired and the a/c returned to service.
2003-08-07: UPDATE TSB reported that after takeoff, the crew of a Northern Dene (Norcanair) SW4 Metro IV, C-FIPW, reported that the left engine (Honeywell TPE 331) was only producing 40 percent power. The aircraft returned to the airport and landed without incident. Maintenance personnel traced the problem to a shorted wire in the EGT system. The EGT system was giving the engine computer a false high temperature indication which responded by bypassing fuel, thereby reducing the engine power. The EGT system was repaired and the aircraft was returned to service.
