Incident at HAY RIVER / MERLYN CARTER AIRPORT NT (CYHY)
2003-07-11: C-GPXY, a Piper PA-32 Lance, had departed Hay River and shortly after, the pilot reported to the CARS operator from 10 miles out that he was experiencing a complete electrical failure and would be returning. The pilot did a fly-by so the operator could advise if the gear appeared down, which it did. The aircraft landed safely at 0308Z without any difficulty. Emergency equipment had been called out. No reported impact on other aircraft. The cause of the failure is not known.
2003-07-23: The aircraft was participating in a Civil Air Search exercise at Buffalo Lake, a short distance from Hay River. The pilot noted he started to lose electrical systems and immediatley extended the landing gear as it is electric/hydraulic. He contacted Hay River CARs station using a hand held VHF that he always carries, a fly by was completed to confirm gear down as all electrical power was gone and no lights were operable to indicate the gear was down and locked. The CARs station contacted ERS and they were on standby. The pilot indicated he did not note the alternator fail light on prior to complete electrical failure, it was a bright evening and he was wearing his sunglasses and concerned with getting the gear down and shedding electrical load. The aircraft landed without incident. Once on the ground the aircraft battery was charged and the aircraft ground run, the alternator fail light was on and maintenance determined the alternator had failed. The alternator has been removed and sent for repair and the aircraft remains out of service until repairs are completed.
