Incident at WHITECOURT AB (CYZU) (Incursion - runway - animal)
2003-07-14: UPDATE TSB reported that the Sunwest Home Aviation Swearingen SA226-TC (SW3), C-GSWK, was operating as CNK 202 from Fox Creek, AB to Whitecourt, AB. During the approach into Whitecourt, the flight crew did not receive a 'gear down' light for the right main gear. After troubleshooting attempts, the light would not illuminate. The flight diverted to the Edmonton Intl airport where an emergency was declared and AFF was put on standby. A fly by of the Tower revealed that the gear appeared down. A landing was performed according to the 'gear up landing with the nose and one main gear extended' checklist which required the shutting down of both engines while over the runway. Maintenance discovered a broken ground wire on the right-hand outboard actuator. The wire was repaired and the aircraft returned to service.
2003-07-11: CNK 202, a Metro II, was inbound to Whitecourt from Calgary and when the a/c was 5 NM final, the crew indicted that they would be conducting a low pass as there was a deer on the runway and the aircraft also had a gear problem. The airport maintainer was called to chase the deer from the runway. ERS services were requested. The crew then decided to divert to Edmonton (YEG). ERS services were requested at YEG. After conducting a low pass CNK 202, landed without incident on Runway 20 at 2357Z. A runway check was conducted and the runway re-opened at 0020z. Minimal impact to operations. TSB will contact the company concerning the gear problem.
