Incident at Lake Winnipegosis


2003-07-07: The pilot of C-FKOA, a DHC-3 Otter on floats, made a precautionary landing on Lake Winnipegosis due to deteriorating weather. During the landing, one float struck a rock and punctured. The a/c was in shallow water about 100 feet from the shore and the pilot flooded the other float to stabilize the a/c. The a/c remained there overnight and will be re-floated today and flown to base. There was one occupant on board and he was not injured. TSB has been in contact with the company.
2003-07-08: UPDATE TSB reported that the Dehavilland DHC-3 aircraft, registration C-FKOA landed on Lake Winnipegosis after encountering bad weather. During the landing the left float was punctured by a submerged reef. The aircraft came to a stop approximately 100 yards from shore in shallow water. The left float sank and the pilot decided to flood the right float in order to stablize the aircraft. The pilot made a radio call to advise of his situation. The radio message was picked by a passing aircraft and was relayed to ATC. The aircraft was not discovered until the following morning. The pilot was the sole person on board and was not injured.
