2003-07-03: UPDATE Maintenance and Manufacturing reported that the oil problem was caused from residual oil from around the oil filter that was not cleaned up at time of an oil change. The filter is located on the firewall. The residual oil about the size of a dime came around a screw head in the cabin floor. In regards to the radio, it was intermittent on transmission but not a problem receiving. The owner also had a hand-held radio with him. The a/c is scheduled to be taken to a radio shop today at the City Centre airport. This is an amateur-built aircraft with no requirement to submit an SDR.
2003-06-30: The Murphy Rebel homebuilt a/c, C-GCRD, departed Fort McMurray at 1857Z with some radio problems (transmissions were intermittent) and then returned 20 minutes later, NORDO. The aircraft landed safely and the pilot then informed FSS he had lost his radio altogether shortly after takeoff and he also had oil leaking into the cockpit from the floorboards. There was no impact on operations. FSS also commented on the fact that the aircraft had radio problems when he had arrived earlier.
