Incident at CALGARY INTL AB (CYYC)
2003-07-03: UPDATE TSB reported that after departure, the number 2 propeller on the Kenn Borek Air Douglas R4D-8 (Super DC-3), registration C-GGKG, would not reduce to cruise rpm from METO rpm. At the same time, the crew observed a substantial oil leak in the number 2 engine (Curtiss Wright R-1820-80). The engine was secured, ATC was advised, and the flight returned to Calgary without further incident. AFF stood by for the landing. Maintenance personnel initially determined that the oil leak originated at two loose bolts on the lower nose case. Further examination identified that the thrust bearing sleeve, which is located behind the lower bolts on the inside of the nose case, was also loose. The nose case was removed, the thrust bearing sleeve was re-secured, the nose case was re-installed and the aircraft was returned to service.
2003-06-16: Calgary TCU advised Calgary Tower that KBA 117, a DC-3 that had departed YYC was returning for a precautionary landing. The crew of KBA 117 later advised they had lost an engine and CFR was called out. KBA 117 landed safely and once on Taxiway Charlie, the crew shut down and did an inspection with CFR. KBA 117 was subsequently towed off the field to the company hangar. Initial information is that the crew observed an oil leak and did a precationary shutdown of the engine. TSB is following up with the operator.
