Incident at RANKIN INLET NU (CYRT)
2003-05-15: UPDATE TSB reported that C-GTJX, a SAAB SF 340B, operating as CAV 7539 had just departed Rankin Inlet for Baker Lake, when the crew observed a Master Warning/Cargo Smoke indication. They carried out the abnormal checklist for this indication, which required that they discharge the fire bottle into the cargo area. They subsequently diverted back to Rankin Inlet, where local fire fighting crews met the aircraft on arrival. A subsequent inspection revealed no indication of any fire or smoke damage in the cargo area. The aircraft was later dispatched under the MEL to the company's maintenance facility in Winnipeg, where the fire detection system will be tested.

Emergency services were requested to meet the aircraft, but the crew did not declare an emergency. The aircraft landed safely at 0105Z and emergency service personnel checked the aircraft and found no fire. TSB will be contacting the company.
