Accident at CAMBRIDGE BAY NU (CYCB)
2003-05-14: UPDATE TSB reported that the Bell 206L-4, registration C-GTHE was en route Cambridge Bay to Resolute Bay. The aircraft was flying in a valley at an approximate altitude of 150-200 feet AGL when it encountered a snow squall coming off a ridge. The pilot's visability began to deteriorate and he elected to land on a gravel clearing. While approaching the clearing, the pilot experienced a whiteout as a result of the rotor wash on the loose snow in the surrounding area. The helicopter landed hard and rolled onto its right side in a dynamic rollover. The pilot received minor injuries and the aircraft was substantially damaged. The pilot was able to contact Resolute Bay with the radio of the helicopter and was picked up a short while later by a Twin Otter aircraft.
2003-05-12: The pilot of C-GTHE, a Newfoundland-based Bell 206 Long Ranger, was on a VFR flight from Cambridge Bay to Resolute Bay when he encountered a local snow squall and attempted to make a precautionary landing on Somerset Island. It was reported that the rotor blades contacted terrain, resulting in substantial damage to the helicopter and minor injuries to the pilot.The ELT was activated and was subsequently turned off at 2359Z when the pilot was rescued by a DHC-6 Twin Otter that had been dispatched from Resolute Bay for the search. TSB has been advised.
