Incident at EDMONTON INTL AB (CYEG)
2003-05-02: JZA 8415, a DHC-8, was inbound to Edmonton from Calgary when the crew reported hitting a bird on descent at 8,000 feet ASL. Some damage to the aircraft was reported. The type of bird is unconfirmed, but the migratory bird season is underway and it may have been a duck or goose. TSB will call the company to determine the damage.
2003-05-06: UPDATE TSB reported that the Air Canada Jazz Dehavilland Dash 8-300, registration C-GEWQ, was operating as flight JZA 8415 from Calgary, AB to Edmonton, AB. While in descent through 8,000 feet for Edmonton, the Dash 8 struck a bird (species undetermined) with the tip of the left horizontal stabilizer. The impact was heard and felt by the cabin crew and passengers. The aircraft landed normally with the following damage reported to the left horizontal stabilizer: torn de-ice boot and extensive damage to the composite leading edge. Authorization was received and the aircraft was ferried to Calgary for repair.
