Incident at NAUJAAT NU (CYUT) (Aerodrome - visual aids, Aerodrome - power failure, ATM - other)

Summary

2003-04-25: UPDATE Aerodrome Safety reported that power outages at remote communities are not unusual. Most settlements have two generators of equal size and capacity as well as a smaller back-up unit in case of a double generator failure. The airport at Repulse Bay is on the same electrical system as the community, so a power interruption has a direct impact on the airport facilities (radios, lights, PAPIs etc.) Aerodrome Safety have suggested that Nunavut and the Territorial governments consider emergency power in the form of battery packs at these airports.
2003-04-22: There was a power outage for 30 seconds at Repulse Bay airport. CAV 751, a Saab 340, was turning final for Runway 34T and a helicopter was working in the MF area at the time. Airport lighting and radios were lost during the outage. The CARS O/C reported that there was no operational impact .
