Incident at RED DEER REGIONAL AB (CYQF)
2003-04-11: The Air Spray Douglas A-26B, C-FPGF, had just departed Red Deer, AB for a local flight when the pilot observed smoke and oil streaming aft from the right engine (P&W R2800-79) power section. A precautionary engine shutdown was performed and the aircraft returned to Red Deer for a single engine approach and landing. Maintenance determined that the oil leak originated from a rocker box lid at the top of the engine.
2003-04-23: UPDATE TSB reported that the Douglas A-26B, registration C-FPGF, was on a local training flight when the right engine oil temperature began to rise. A short time later the oil pressure dropped and black smoke began to discharge from the exhaust. The engine (Pratt and Whitney R-2800-79) was shut down and the aircraft made a single engine landing at Red Deer without incident. A cursory examination determined that the engine had sustained an internal failure. The operator will be submitting a Service Difficulty Report to Transport Canada once the reason for the failure is identified.
